Lawrence McMichael has experience in both federal and state courts including appellate courts and has tried, as lead counsel, numerous non-jury and major jury trials, involving civil, criminal, bankruptcy and insolvency matters with a special emphasis defending corporate clients in high profile cases. Representative Experience
- Represented Philadelphia Newspapers LLC in a Chapter 11 proceeding in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
- Represented a Malaysian satellite company in a bankruptcy auction of a $210,000,000 in orbit satellite.
- Represented Sanjay Kumar, the former Chairman and CEO of Computer Associates, Inc. (now CA, Inc.) in connection with restitution matters and other issues concerning his criminal prosecution.
- Represented the Rigases in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York involving Adelphia Communications Corp., United States District Court for the Southern District of New York for criminal sentencing and forfeiture issues, including a successful appeal to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, in state court in Pennsylvania in a dismissed case brought by Deloitte & Touche LLP, in the district court in Pennsylvania on a pending federal criminal tax indictment; certain double jeopardy issues in that matter were later argued and won in United States Court of Appeals for Third Circuit.
- Represented the República Oriental Del Uruguay (The Republic of Uruguay) in litigation involving certain transactions between Uruguay and three international banks in the Southern District of New York and argued an appeal on behalf of Uruguay in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.
- Represented a major hotel developer in a case involving more than $100,000,000 that was tried for more than one year in the Bankruptcy Court in Philadelphia and resulted in a 145-page opinion in favor of the developer.
- Debtor’s counsel for a major anthracite coal producer in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
- Represented a New York broker-dealer in a four week jury trial in Philadelphia involving short selling practices. Case resulted in a defense verdict in favor of client.
