Webinar: Immigration Law: Employee Verification and Benefits of E-Verify

Webinar – Wednesday, May 15, 2013

In recent years, Federal authorities have increased the number of worksite audits and investigations into whether employers have properly verified that their employees are authorized to work in the U.S., and further, to ensure compliance with the procedural I-9 Form requirements. And signs are that this trend of intensified audits and investigations is likely to continue, and even increase. Proposed comprehensive immigration reform legislation includes provisions calling for stricter employee verification requirements including mandatory use of E-verify, and increased penalties for non-compliance. This seminar will clarify various facets of this progressively complex process and how it affects your business, and most importantly, what you can do to avoid problems.

I-9 Compliance, Audits, and Investigations
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) targets illegal immigration by focusing on U.S. employers. ICE uses the I-9 Form and hiring records to target employers that do not comply with employment eligibility verification laws. Join us for discussion on:

  • The federal I-9 immigration audit and investigation process
  • Industries targeted for immigration investigations
  • Changes to current immigration enforcement based on Congressional proposals
  • How to avoid discriminatory practices when asking for information
  • Completing the I-9 Form properly and completely
  • The most common errors that can result in ICE scrutiny and fines

E-Verify
The federal government and many states already require E-Verify compliance as part of employee verification. E-Verify enables business owners to verify new employees’ authorization to work in the U.S. Presenters will review:

  • How E-Verify works, and pros and cons to participation
  • Special considerations for federal contractors
  • Keeping up with state requirements
  • Extensions for STEM foreign employees
  • Safe havens
