Expanded “Ban the Box” Law Takes Effect

The amended version of Philadelphia’s 2011 “Ban the Box” law, signed in December 2015 by former Mayor Michael Nutter, officially takes effect today, March 14, 2016. The 2011 law, while effective in removing the “box” from job applications and delaying questions about criminal records, needed strengthening to ensure that criminal records information were used fairly. The new law applies to all public and private employers in Philadelphia with one or more employees, versus ten workers in the original law. Dilworth’s Labor and Employment Practice Group attorneys have already been receiving questions from clients regarding the changes.
