Dilworth Paxson LLP Welcomes Innovative IP Attorney John A. Squires to the Firm

May 8, 2017 (Philadelphia, PA) – Dilworth Paxson LLP Chairman and CEO Ajay Raju announced that leading Intellectual Property and Patent attorney John A. Squires has joined the Firm as a Partner based in Dilworth’s New York office, as its IP and Emerging Company practice continues to grow. He comes to Dilworth from Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in New York. Mr. Squires has a broad emerging company and intellectual property practice and is among the country’s leading IP strategists, patent practitioners, and litigators, whose experience includes groundbreaking work in blockchain, artificial intelligence, risk-related technologies, and cyber security. He recently co-authored the seminal Journal of Law and Cyber Warfare article: It’s the Cyber Crime and its Sponsors (Not My Cyber-Security), Stupid. Long recognized as a pioneering fintech lawyer, Mr. Squires co-founded one of the nation’s first “Fintech/Regtech” platforms, Regulatory DataCorp, to combat terrorist financing in the wake of 9/11. Mr. Squires brings decades of expertise to IP transactions, licensing, IP due diligence corporate formation, mergers and acquisitions, and a host of venture debt and private equity matters.

Mr. Squires founded Goldman Sachs’ patent practice in 2000 and served as Goldman’s Chief Intellectual Property Counsel with responsibility for the company’s global IP practice and policy. At Goldman, he also directed the firm’s intellectual property asset value capture, clearance, and licensing efforts. From 2002-to 2008, Mr. Squires chaired the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (“SIFMA”) IP subcommittee and remains heavily involved in patent reform efforts vis-à-vis all branches of government and their agencies. Notably, he has provided Senate Judiciary testimony on behalf of SIFMA, The Financial Services Roundtable, and American Bankers Association on “Patent Reform: The Future of Innovation.” Additionally, he provided testimony to the Federal Trade Commission in support of its 2011 report, “The Evolving IP Market Place”, and was a member of the Patent Damages Handbook Committee for the Federal Judicial Center.

A strong proponent for market treatment of patents as ‘assets per se,’ Mr. Squires helped create the first structured patent finance offering in the US for one of the world’s leading, highly diversified global investment management firms.

Prior to joining Goldman Sachs Mr. Squires served as Chief Intellectual Property Counsel for Allied Signal, now Honeywell, Inc.’s Advanced Technologies Division. Previous to his tenure with Allied Signal, Mr. Squires was an associate in private practice at Rogers & Wells, and started his legal career as an associate with the New York IP boutique, Morgan & Finnegan.

Mr. Squires has consistently ranked as one of the leading Intellectual Property and Patent lawyers in America by Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business and The Best Lawyers in America©. He is also recognized by Managing Intellectual Property magazine as an “IP Star” and has been named both to Intellectual Asset Magazine’s IAM Patent 1000 in New York and IAM Strategy 300 as one of The World’s Leading IP Strategists. He has also received—through nominations by corporate counsel—the Client Choice Award for Intellectual Property by Lexology and the International Law Office, which recognizes law firms and partners around the world that stand apart for their excellent client care and quality of service.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to have John join Dilworth Paxson, particularly at this moment,” said Raju. Our IP practice is growing steadily, and John’s unparalleled expertise will not only accelerate that growth but meaningfully enhance both the scope and depth of critical IP services Dilworth provides to our clients.”
