Overview

Joseph R. Loverdi counsels federal financial institutions on operational, compliance, and regulatory issues. As outside general counsel of the region’s largest federal credit union, he has extensive experience with regulations and guidance issued by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, National Credit Union Administration, and other federal banking agencies. He understands the issues that these institutions face and provides guidance on best practices for reducing compliance, legal, strategic, and reputation risks.

Joe also has over 20 years of experience litigating complex commercial cases in both state and federal court involving business disputes, breaches of contract, environmental and toxic torts, antitrust and trade regulation, real estate, and construction defects.

From 1996 to 1997, Joe served as a law clerk to the Honorable Joseph H. Rodriguez of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. Before attending law school, Joe was an auditor at Arthur Andersen LLP, during which time he passed the Uniform Certified Public Accountants examination.

Representative Experience

  • Serve as general counsel and chief compliance officer of a $6 billion regional federal credit union by providing counsel on all operational, regulatory, and compliance issues, including drafting and maintaining compliance policies and programs, negotiating contracts, and litigating loan foreclosure and consumer loan default actions.
  • Represented a leading national integrated pharmacy services provider in myriad litigation in New Jersey and Pennsylvania including, among other things, landlord-tenant disputes, foreclosure, partnership dissolution, lease termination, and construction defects/disputes.
  • Represented a multi-national waste management and disposal corporation in national Superfund litigation matters, including putative class action toxic tort litigation brought on behalf of over 400 residences in Lake County, Illinois, concerning alleged contamination of groundwater emanating from a neighboring former landfill.
  • Represented an investor group in securities fraud claims against an investment adviser and its former officers and directors resulting from investments in a Ponzi scheme orchestrated by the adviser’s former chief operating and marketing officer.
  • Represented the former owners and officers of a sports equipment reconditioning business in defense of breach of contract, fraud, and rescission claims brought by the national sports equipment manufacturing company that subsequently purchased the business.
  • Represented the inventor and former CEO of a failed start-up technology company based in Boston, Massachusetts, in breach of fiduciary duty claims against the former company’s directors and investors.
  • Represented a major Canadian beer company in the defense of private litigation to force the voluntary remediation of historical groundwater contamination in compliance with Pennsylvania Act 2 standards at a former dairy facility in Pennsylvania.
